Ministers to the Homebound and Hospitalized

Volunteers provide for the sacramental care of parishoners who are homebound, hospitalized or otherwise unable to join the community at weekly Mass.

Due to privacy regulations enacted in recent years, hospitals are no longer permitted to contact a patient's parish in the event of their hospitalization. If you are, or know of another parishoner who is hospitalized, please phone the rectory so that arrangements can be made to provide sacraments and a visit from their Pastor.

Catechist Opportunities

Catechists facilitate and/or lead faith formation sessions using age-appropriate material provided. Catechists should be comfortable in large and small group settings and have a love of children, a good sense of humor, a willingness to share their faith and an openness to further their own personal faith growth.

Children's Gospel Leaders

Group of volunteers take turn leading the Children's Gospel lessons during the 9:30 Sunday Mass. Additional volunteers are always needed.

Knights of Columbus

This fraternal men’s organization is open to all over the age of 18. Their purpose is to give witness to the faith through word and deed. The local Council, Ave Maria Council #5521, is located at 61533 S. Ironwood Road. Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. The cooperative action of the membership hosts a Fish Fry on the 1st Friday of each month and every Friday in Lent. This charitable organization of long-standing tradition in the Church works for the benefit of the poor and the needy in the neighborhood. Through the generosity of the parishioners, the Society helps prepare food baskets in times of need as well as provide clothing and shelter in emergency situations.

Legion of Mary

The membership provides prayer and devotion in the name of Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our Heavenly Mother. They bring the Good News of the Gospel to the homebound and those in nursing facilities and hospitals. Active members are given a weekly assignment that takes about two to three hours.

VIP’s

The goal is to provide recreation and fellowship for retired or over age 55. Members volunteer food and/or help to serve funeral luncheons to families of deceased parishioners. Luncheon meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. Please see the bulletin for locations.

St. Augustine Soup Kitchen

This volunteer-based group has been active in the parish since 1975. They gather to help prepare soup for the Soup Kitchen functional at St. Augustine’s Parish in South Bend.

Every third Tuesday of the month, a concentrated soup is made, cooled and refrigerated. The soup is “enhanced” and served the next day. As many as 300 people are served on Monday, Wednesday and Friday - rain, shine, snow or sleet! The Soup Kitchen is open 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. We always need volunteers to make soup.
